Homemade “Modern” Pens

Here’s what you need
You need 4 pieces to make the pen
1 piece of solid rod 1/16th” in Diameter - Evergreen #222
1 Piece of brass tube 3/32” in diameter
1 piece of plastic tube 1/8” in diameter - Evergreen #224
1 short piece of wire (I think I use 1/16th)
Plus a tube cutter, file, hobby knife, wire cutter, CA glue,
1/16th bit/drill and some paint

Here’s what you do
Cut the solid small rod into a 1 1/8” piece
This becomes the ink cartridge and holds everything together
Take the 1/8” plastic tube and file it down to about half it’s thickness for about
A half an inch and bevel the exposed edges
(Hint: do not cut
the rod first leave it long and file it down first)
Then cut the rod with the hobby knife to 3/8th”
Make a flat cut or file it flat
This makes the cap
Use the tube cutter and cut the brass rod to xx” long
(When you cut the brass rod with the tube cutter it will leave a rounded edge
On the piece you just cut. Do not file this down as this makes the holder for the ink cartridge
On subsequent pens file down one side so the rod can fit through it)
File the solid rods end to a point so it fits through the brass rod
With the point sticking out

Attach the cap with CA glue
File the cap to a rounded end to suit your desire
Drill a hole in the center of the cap a little in from the end
Bend the wire to approximately a 100-degree angel and glue it on
(A little more than 90 degrees so it clips)
Paint it your color choice!
And a Pen

Variants
Closed Pens

Omit filing the solid rod to fit the brass tube
Various Sizes
Alter the lengths to suit

The blue pens are a little shorter than in the directions
These are more to scale but the longer one looks better
Pencils

Since you’ve got this rod and tubing make a few pencils too!

Use just the 1/16th rod to make small pencils like the red and brown one
Or
Cut the brass tube as above
File the small rod to a point
Put the rod in brass tube leaving a little at the end for an eraser
And bingo a pencil!
